DEALING WITH STRESS GONE WILD!
Dealing with stress can be most stressful . . . an impossible double bind. Left unchecked, stress kills. Eighty to ninety percent of brain body disease is stress related. The rise in treatments due to stress has escalated to a billion dollar industry, yet the stress toll plunges to new deficits
The easy option to deal with stress is not to deal with stress.. . just check out. That’s what my family of origin did best. The women sedated their stress with pills and the men preferred liquid relaxers. The tee total-ers opted to reduce stress with food, shopping, tv, sports or hobbies and more.
STRESS . . . GONE WILD?
Then there are those that do the opposite. They thrive, come alive and create imaginary stress. If stress levels tank, they are out of comfort zone and seem to fear they will unravel or cease to exist if they were not stressing. It’s how they relate to the world. At 96 years of age, Mary showed for her first Brain Body Balance session. My goal for each student regardless of age is the same. I implement and teach them self help techniques to set their INSIDE peace, purpose and prosperity free. Mary had her own goal and she was not about to budge!
From the start, Mary called the shots. Her OUTSIDE packaging was deceptive. INSIDE all her fuses were blown. Her soft voice, quick smile, stooped, frail body veneered her true nature. She was stubborn, controlling, inflexible and miserable. Misery was her comfort zone. Mary didn’t, couldn’t, wouldn’t let go and thrived on self inflicted, imaginary stress. Now that’s stress gone wild!
Brain Body Balance is a 3-4 sessions training. Even though the techniques are easy and brief and the results are instant, Mary refused to even give them a try in the entire 3 years she showed for her monthly tweak. She’d still be coming but she recently graduated to the Classroom of Higher Learning.
Where ever Mary went, everyone did it her way. You just could not tell her no. I was no exception. I broke all my rules for how I structure the sessions. Mary was the exception. Underneath it all, Mary had a trait that it takes to change. . . Mary was motivated to seek Truth.
She sat in the same chair with her feet dangling, lost in the array of pillows that propping her up. She rang her hands with a desperate look on her face. Each time she did it the same way. Here’s the gist of how it went.
E: “How are you today, Mary?”
Mary: “The traffic was bad and it’s so hot.”
E: “What’s on your mind today, Mary?”
Mary: “It’s my husband. His shoulder is stiff and he can’t play golf like he used to . . . and I’m so afraid I may lose him. He’ll be 98 next month.”
(Present Resistance and Future Striving)
Mary: “Another thing, my left elbow aches and I’m not so good at my tennis now.”
Mary: “Yes, and my son is coming next week and I’m not certain that’s good because it could rain a lot this time of the year.”
Mary: “Yes, and my great, great granddaughter was really sick with the flu and I was worried to death about her.”
E: Clapping my hands loudly to startle Mary and interrupt the state of whine, I sternly stated: “Mary! Stop! It’s my turn. I have questions for you.”
E: “Do you know if you, your husband at 98 or your great, great, granddaughter at 8 will be here next week, tomorrow or even in five minute?”
E: “Have you ever had a glimpse into the next five minutes in your entire 96 years?”
E: “So do you agree that you will never ever know the future because it does not exist?”
E: “Do you agree that you have not, cannot and never will go back to the past?”
E: “So you agree that the past fear reruns are only memories, and are not reality?”
E: “Do you agree that this Present moment is all there ever was, is and ever will be?”
E: “Are you OK this very moment? Do you have your needs met in the Present moment: safety, air, breath, water and food?”
E: “I rest my case, sessions over.”
Mary would then get up with my help, give me a big hug and smile, raved about how much better she felt, only to return for a repeat performance the very next month for over 3 years.
To my knowledge, Mary never ‘got it’ . . . in 97 earth bound years.
“When the pain gets greater than the pay back, the creative flow is freed.”-Streve Brown
The real secret to living stress free is to Be Present. The Present is one thought choice away. Shift into your own skin, see with your own eyes, take a deep breath and just be aware of what is . . .
” Life is a series of moments . . . leave the Present, miss your life. “

(P.S. I have a hunch that Mary got it too . . . in the Classroom of Higher Learning and could now change seats and be my teacher! )
