The little girl in the picture above just turned four. She often lay awake at night listening to the sounds of parents arguing . . . the front door slamming so hard her bed shook, her Mom’s gut wrenching sobs. She did what all she knew to do. She got out of bed each time to offer all she had, hoping her hugs would make Mom better.
Then her world unraveled. . . even more. School just let out let out. She could hear the sounds her ‘big sister and neighborhood kids outdoors gathering to play ‘tag you are it’ Back then, kids were not to be heard or seen until after dark when they were called in for ‘supper time’. She hoped they’d let her play today. She started toward the door just as her Mom called out, “Come here, I need you.”
She had no choice, no voice. She hurried to her Mom’s bedside to find her propped up on pillows, gasping for breath. “You can’t go to play outside today. I can’t breathe. Sit beside me on this stool and pray. .Your prayers make me better.”

Each time she was called in to stool sit and pray, she was more overwhelmed by the unspoken message: “You are responsible for life, breath and death.” Her mind raced. What if her prayers failed? How would life be with no parent? How do kids raise themselves? The words seared in her memory files and startled her body . . . sinking her deeper and driving her life course for decades to come.

It came natural as an adult for her to pursue a job as a helper. She was secretly seeking answers for her own life. Do troubles still show up OUTSIDE my life? You bet. It’s not that life troubles come your way, the test is: “Can people, situations and things get a rise out of you? Does your brain body pay the stress toll?”
Talk therapy, making affirmations, reading about problems, talking them over with a friend addresses 1-3% of your conscious awareness. It can cut the weeds but not the roots. Each repetition makes stronger neural pathways that sink the habit deeper, when the unconscious and conscious do not agree.
